Cleaning the milk system

One of the most important maintenance processes in an espresso machine is cleaning the milk system. The machine's frothed milk function allows you to make a variety of drinks such as cappuccino, latte macchiato, or flat white, but when you neglect or forget to clean the milk track - there is a very high risk of failure. As a result, the machine stops frothing milk, and instead of a latte macchiato you will get a regular coffee with milk. In extreme cases, the system can become so dirty that the machine will not be able to draw milk into the system. Thanks to this article, you will learn how to take care of your milk system and what to do if you forget to clean it.

How to clean the milk system in the coffee machine?

Cleaning of the milk system is carried out as follows:

  1. Prepare the solution according to the manufacturer's instructions in proportions of 15 ml of the preparation COFFIX Cappuccino Cleaner For every 250 ml of water.
  2. Dip the milk intake hose into the solution and run the milk frothing track cleaning program on the machine.
  3. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer of the machine.
  4. If there is no cleaning program in the machine, set the container with the prepared solution in place of the milk container and press the "milk" selection on the machine, then repeat the operation.
  5. After the process, the system should be flushed with clean water.

For hard-to-remove dirt, first soak the soiled parts in a solution of higher concentration (e.g. 30 ml of the product per 250 ml of water), and then rinse under running water. The best results are provided by daily, regular cleaning.

In the case of coffee makers with a carafe, we can additionally take apart and wash the container:

  1. Take the carafe out of the machine and pull off the top.
  2. Unplug the dispensing nozzle and the tube.
  3. We remove the adjustment knob according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  4. Rinse all components thoroughly under running water or in the dishwasher (if the instruction manual allows it).

How often to perform milk system cleaning?

According to our recommendations, cleaning should be done A maximum of 4 hours after the last milk coffee. Most often, we recommend that the process should always be carried out at the end of the day, if a milk drink was prepared in the machine on that day. Special attention should be paid to the frequency of cleaning during the summer, when the risk of milk deposits remaining in the system is increased due to the temperature.

If we do not have the opportunity or time to carry out a full cleaning of the milk system - it is enough to rinse the system with water alone or with water and cleaning liquid by selecting frothed milk in the machine. Such cleaning will keep the milk track clean and will definitely improve the quality of coffee drinks, as well as extend the life of the machine.

Espresso machine does not froth milk

If the failure of the milk system is so advanced that it does not froth or draw milk at all - we recommend taking the system apart according to the manufacturer's instruction manual. Rinse and wash the individual parts, which are usually rubber, under running water. If rinsing with water does not remove the remaining deposits - we recommend soaking the parts in a solution (15 ml of agent COFFIX Cappuccino Cleaner for every 250 ml of water) for about 10-15 minutes.
