Types of coffee beans

Arabica coffee, is one of the two main coffee species used to make coffee drinks, along with Robusta coffee. Its history probably dates back to Ethiopia. Today, it is grown all over the world, especially in temperate regions.

One of Arabica's most prized qualities is its delicate flavor and the richness and complexity of its aroma. It is characterized by a wide spectrum of flavors that include fruity, floral, chocolate, sweet, sour or herbal notes. These diverse flavors depend on where the beans are grown and how they are processed.

It is worth noting that Arabica coffee has a lower caffeine content compared to Robusta coffee. Arabica beans typically contain between 0.8% and 1.4% of caffeine, making it a more suitable choice for those sensitive to caffeine.

However, the Arabica plant is more delicate and requires more favorable growing conditions than Robusta. It prefers higher altitudes, cooler climates, humidity and fertile soil. It is also more susceptible to diseases and pests, which can make growing Arabica more challenging.

Arabica accounts for most of the world's production of high-quality coffee. It is used in many high-quality coffee blends and is the preferred choice in coffee shops and by gourmet coffee drinkers. Its valuation is due to its exceptional flavor, variety and high quality.

The high quality of Arabica coffee is also reflected in its price. It is usually more expensive than Robusta coffee due to the higher production costs and the fineness of the plant. However, coffee lovers are often willing to pay more for the unique taste and aroma experience offered by Arabica.

The processing of Arabica beans has a significant impact on the final taste of the coffee. The beans are often subjected to different drying methods: sun drying, wet processing (washing method) or natural method. This processing affects the taste, aroma and overall quality of Arabica coffee.

Arabica coffee has gained immense popularity for its refined quality of flavor and aroma. Its unique flavor characteristics and diversity make it one of the most prized coffee varieties by lovers around the world.

Robusta coffee constitutes one of the two main coffee species, along with Arabica coffee, and plays an important role in coffee production around the world. It is believed to have originated in Central African regions such as the Congo and Uganda, and is now grown in various countries with tropical climates around the globe.

Robusta coffee beans have their own distinctive characteristics. They tend to be smaller and rounder than Arabica coffee beans. Importantly, they contain significantly more caffeine, accounting for 2.2% to 2.7% by weight, making them a more stimulating coffee than Arabica. The higher caffeine content of Robusta beans is a key factor in their resistance to pests and disease, making the plant more resilient in growing conditions.

The taste and aroma of Robusta coffee are different from Arabica. It is known for its intense and full-bodied flavor, usually exhibiting stronger bitter, grainy and sometimes earthy notes. It is these characteristics that make it less delicate compared to the mild Arabica. However, despite its intensity, it may lack the subtlety of flavor and aromatic diversity that Arabica coffee offers.

Robusta coffee is often used in the production of ground coffees, blended with Arabica, and as an addition to instant coffees. Due to its strength and higher caffeine content, it is often preferred for stronger flavored coffees, especially in espresso or capsule coffees.

In terms of growing conditions, Robusta coffee is more tolerant of different climatic and soil conditions. It can grow at lower altitudes, in hotter climates and in less fertile soil than Arabica. It is also more resistant to pests and diseases, making it more adaptable to growing conditions in unfavorable areas.

Although Robusta coffee does not enjoy the same popularity as Arabica in terms of high quality flavor and aroma, it still plays an important role in the coffee industry. Its qualities, such as strength, high caffeine content and availability, make it valued in the production of various types of coffee and an important ingredient in many blended coffee compositions.
