How does water affect the taste of coffee?

Water is undeniably the most important ingredient in coffee. It is what significantly affects its taste. High quality water, is a guarantee of high quality coffee. But what exactly is quality water? Is it enough that it is filtered? To answer briefly - not really. The ideal water for coffee must not have any impurities, and its hardness should range from 3 to 5 degrees of hardness on the German scale. This range is due to the beneficial properties of the minerals contained in the water. They are great carriers of microscopic particles, which translates into a better taste of coffee and correct operation of cleaning agents dissolved in water. Filtration will certainly help to get rid of mechanical and organic impurities, but the situation with water hardness is a bit more complicated. It is assumed that the water filter in the coffee machine reduces its hardness by about 8 degrees. So any coffee machine user using a tank water filter should pour water with a hardness of 11 - 13 degrees into the machine.

The effect of water quality on the operation of the espresso machine.

It is important to remember that the quality of water translates not only into the taste of the coffee itself. Equally important, it affects the quality of the machine itself and its components. Unfiltered water will quickly scale the machine, and as we well know, limescale is the biggest enemy of any coffee maker. That's why it's so important to use filters in the machine. Even with regular decalcification of the machine with professional means, we will not get rid of all the lime deposits from the machine if we do not use filters, and the hardness of the water going into the tank is above 8 degrees of hardness on the German scale.

How often should I change the filter in the coffee machine?

To get the most out of your coffee filter, replace it every 1-2 months. This will keep your coffee tasting its best and prevent calcium buildup in your machine. The first filter replacements should always be done in conjunction with the machine's instruction manual. If your water hardness level is high, more frequent filter changes may be necessary. In addition to just changing the filter, it is also important to clean your coffee maker regularly.
